Meet Kayla Steward
Kayla Steward
Born in Saint Paul, MN. I'm an Artist in my own right. I have been creating and developing my talents at an early age starting with water colors but I knew I had talent when I recognized the color in my eyes. I usually doodle or sketch mostly everything to transform these ideas that manifests into something of a born idea. For me these ideas are a perfect thought but when trying to create that imagery on paper becomes secondary, still it is the aesthetic emotions that I portray in my pieces that I want people to be moved by. I have been creating some unique bracelets trying to identify with my body of work as far as color is concern delivering a duality in my message. The Collection is known as the K.S. collection. I am going to further my expedition in exploring new ideas to create more.
At the age of 12 my poem was published through a contest, in a Book Timeless Voices. At 13 two of my photographs were purchased in a Community Outreach Gala and during high school I was a part of Central Touring Theatre for two years, I interned with Eliza Rasheed who was Jan Mandell student that started a theatre program that created and performed its own production throughout the school year. We toured Carlton College, Mankato States, University of MN, As well as junior high, and elementary schools. Having open dialogue with the audience members about topics we brought up.
In 2011 I participated in the 7th annual Intergenerational spoken word series Pass the Mic. Honoring Sonia Sanchez, and Daniel Simmons who started Def Poetry Jam. In 2011 I completed the twin Cities youth poetry slam series to be a part of the team of Brave New Voices sadly I was dropped from the team because I couldn’t make it to one meeting, but was a part of the 2013, youth poetry team representing MN. In 2013 I was a part of a discussion panel regarding Tan skin vs. Brown skin at Augsburg College. My experience with being an artist comes in many different forms which made me diversified in the various bodies of work, I am a creator.

Artist Statement: Kayla Steward
My understanding of color came to me at a very early age. I came to understand the color wheel and the concept of primary and secondary colors. At some point in my early years I then knew I wanted to be an artist .As I got older I retired the crayons used markers and made strides in my artwork by making acrylic paintings. I choose to create art work on regular notebook paper taking away any significance of the use of a canvas striving to show that if I say it’s a work of art that’s what I intended it to be in the art world.
I see vibrant color in people because it is symbolic to me of the weight they carry in their day to day lives. My First experience was watching people walk through life picking up emotions and colors throughout the day. The colors represents attitude and how we connect such as red we sometimes recognize it with being angry or blue being mellow or calming and so forth. I realize that when these members of society arrive home and take that deep breath, then drop colors of aura and saturated sentiments off their being. That's what I envision when I create these images of colors splotches. In my pieces the color splotches are touching more than one thing so I want the viewers to take away with them, the aesthetics that I present in my pieces.
There is constant duality with nature amongst people with the flow of the universe that is symbolic as well. Nature's duality lies in connection with implicitly connecting life, material and birthing life itself as we know so well with a language we all can understand. This dualism constantly evolves with nature and people showing that it has two sides like a coin connecting and connecting like an artist to their creation evoking aesthetic emotions. I find myself to be diversified in being able to create a connection of this duality as an art form when creating pieces that connect with how we embrace different types of art and its beauty. This body of work I call The K.S. Collection. I began finding other ways to make color splotches as something you can wear. I started a year and a half ago with traditional handwoven bracelets that has evolved using warm inviting colors.
I design The K.S. Collection in my spare time to bring a new form of creativities to my arsenal. I plainly started the K.S. collection to spark joy. My favorite young lady was 8 years old, such a strong copious spirit, who was thermally ill. I designed her multiple bright orange bracelets and I never seen someone illuminate such a glorious smile so big and at that point It awakened more creativeness in me it helped me better embrace the K.S. collection. I embrace the colors with my paint brush creating bold and beautiful paintings as well. I learned to transform and manifest my sculpting of jewelry through color and paintings that create who I am today.
