Bio:
Macrina Hernandez
I was born and raised in the steel mill laced urban city of East Chicago, Indiana. I was not exposed to many different facets of artistry. All ideas and opinions that were held in my childhood home revolved around two things, pride in earning a decent living and above all walking with faith of God.
Growing up with Catholicism values, the subject of sexuality was forbidden it was not suitable to hold in the house. My siblings and I passed pubescent knowledge down to one another. This was somewhat puzzling to me and engrained in my mind that the very idea of sexuality was taboo, bad, wrong, uncivil, and even against my religion.
I accepted this as the truth and never questioned it. That is major ideal of Catholicism to not question things, but to just accept it and have faith.

I
create
beautiful
art.

 Artist Statement:
Upon discovering my love of art later in life I have established a profound interest in clay but my biggest inspiration of art sculpting truly comes from my professor(s) Neil Goodman and Derek Walter whom introduced me to the arts of the Moche tribe of Peru. It focuses on depictions of the male and female genitalia.

I felt shy and even ashamed of speaking about the human anatomy because of my upbringing, but as I discovered ceramics it made it self-fulfilling in relieving the sexual tension I lived with my whole entire adult life. Ceramics and sculpting has inspired me because the aesthetic emotion it evokes not just within me but in others.

The formation of my sculpting also derives from my depiction of colors, tones and the outcome of the infusion of glass which creates an organic appearance of its sexual nature. I identify with my work and include that we all live and know of its sensuality having genitalia of our own nature that we are given at birth and at some point grasps the idea of sexual nature and not to be ashamed of it.
